Curioso el tema de que el importador sea Ordoñez....ejem...salut!

However, (surprise, surprise) even better is the 2004 Gran Reserva which has yet to be released. It spent 5 years in barrel before bottling. Purple/black in color with a surreal bouquet of kinky spice, truffle, mineral, and black fruit aromas, on the palate it is remarkably powerful, yet elegant. Mouth-filling, complex, and staggeringly rich, it has the balance to evolve for 15-20 years and should easily have a 50 year lifespan.
Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza is one of Rioja’s benchmark estates. It encompasses about 132 acres located in four regions of Alava Rioja planted to approximately 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. The winery itself is located in the village of Samaniego. Upon my arrival at the Bodega in May 2010, I discovered a surprise. In addition to a vertical tasting of all the Reservas, Senor Remirez had prepared a similar vertical of Trasnocho, a wine that has never been exported to the USA. With all due respect, the greatest vintages from Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza in my opinion are 2004 and 2001. Trasnocho is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza’s take on a more contemporary style.

Focus on Rioja
Rioja is the leading wine region of Spain. It is divided into three zones, Rioja Alta, Rioja
Alavesa, and Rioja Baja. Because of this and the region’s expanse, it is difficult to make
generalizations. Tempranillo is the principal grape, particularly in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.
However, even there, the majority of wines are blends, making use of small amounts of
Garnacha, Graciano, and occasionally Mazuelo (a.k.a. Cariñena).
Recently, attention has been given to supposed conflicts between the traditional producers
(such as Lopez de Heredia and C.V.N.E.) and modernists such as Allende and Artadi. In
reality, the producers seem to co-exist rather comfortably. Many of the old-line wineries are
dabbling in more modern styles, but I saw no one who is abandoning the old ways of doing
things. Hopefully that will continue to be the case because one thing is certain; there is
nothing else anywhere like traditional Rioja where the terms Crianza, Reserva, and Gran
Reserva still mean something. I saw no signs that these traditions are fading away.
Among recent Rioja vintages three stand out. I tasted many barrel samples during my May
2010 trip to Rioja, and it seems clear that 2009 is an exceptional vintage. In Rioja it is not
quite as fantastic as in Ribera del Duero and Toro, the other important Tempranillo regions.
However, you have to go back to 2004 to find anything as good. The year 2001 is also a great
vintage with a number of Gran Reservas being released. One could make a case for 2005 as
well. It is a very powerful vintage but a bit more irregular than 2009, 2004, and 2001. As for
the rest of the decade, 2002 is clearly the weakest. 2003 was the year of the heat wave but
skilled vignerons were frequently able to turn out excellent, if not great, wines. The years
2006, 2007, and 2008 had their issues but they are generally good vintages, although it is
unlikely that anything from these vintages will reach the heights of 2001, 2004, 2005, and
2009.
The unspoken issue is the economy. Spain’s construction industry has come to a screeching
halt. Unemployment is very high, one of the factors in Spain’s remarkably rapid decrease in
per capita wine consumption that has producers very concerned. The domestic market is still
the most important, but it is clearly hurting. The falling Euro cuts both ways. It makes imports
of Spanish wine less expensive. Spain was one of only three countries whose exports to the
USA rose in 2009 (Chile and Argentina being the others). However, it makes the producers
expenses go up rather dramatically. No one really knows how this will all shake out. One thing
is clear, however. There continues to be an amazing number of high quality Spanish wines at
very reasonable prices, a nice break for the American consumer.
