Opiniones de Caballo Loco Grand Cru -Limarí- 2013 (DO. Limarí Valley)

ORIGEN

The fruit is all sourced from Limarí Valley. The Pacific Ocean’s cooling "Camanchaca fog" creeps into the valley from the west each afternoon and retreats as the sun rises over the Andes and bathes the vines in pure light in the afternoon. With less than 12 inches of rainfall per year, drip irrigation allows the vines to flourish as their roots dig deep into the calcareous soils. The combination creates rich wines with a distinctive mineral edge.

HARVEST

Hand picked. May 15th

VINIFICATION

Grapes were carefully hand selected. Bunches were gently de-stemmed, and then fermented in small stainless steel open top tanks. During fermentation the skins cap is pushed by hand three times a day. Total maceration time on skins of 21 days. The wine was aged for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels.

TASTING by Javier Azcona

Ruby colour, deep intensity, clear, with tears.

Clean, medium+ intensity,  habano aroma, vegetables, dry sheets, te, cocoa.

Some of fruit like cherry, strawberry in aromas.

In my mouth,…the wine is dry with high tannins, medium+ acidity, medium + body, high alcohol.

Pronounced, intense in flavours, red cherry, cocoa, honey, violet, marmalade, oak. Some green stem flavours and stony (calcareous)

Long finish with yoghurt flavours.

Some notes lactics of MLF or clarification with albumen maybe.

24 hours.-

Very good high-acidity, soft and medium+ tannins, measure, spicy, nuts (peanut), strawberry, red cherry. High alcohol, but full bodied integrated in structural compounds. Long finish, oaky but fine integrated, fruity and salty. Pronounced in flavours.

CONCLUSIONS

Very good quality wine, high potential for ageing, becuase its acidity, tannins and alcohol in high top conditions. It is a fruity wine with concentrated flavours, comeplexity in aromas and flavours, some rounded tasting notes, complex palate and some smoky, earthy and salty notes from oak well matured.

A Very difficult Syrah to discover in a blind tasting, peppery, spicy, and black fruity in flavours at the end.

In a few years it will be more balanced.

PAIRING

Ribs with spicy sauce CAJUN and peanuts cream
