Ver mensaje de RayQI have recently received a bottle of Pesquera Reserva Especial
It says it was bottled in 1.984
Does this mean it is from 1980 ?
There does not seem to be any vintage date on the bottle.
I wonder if those early especial bottlings were perhaps blends of good years a la VS ??
and the big question....will it be drinkable ?
(I know there’s only one way to find out !!)
anyone got any experience of this ?

Ver mensaje de RayQAre you sure you don’t mean 1994. My impression was that 1994 was the only year there was a Reserva Especial. It was released too early to be labeled Gran Reserva, but it had the same barrel time than the 1994 Pesquera Gran Reserva.

and definately 1984...
I have the bottle in Spain so can’t look at it now but I saw it over the weekend.
I think I may e-mail the bodega.

Ver mensaje de RayQIf there was a Reserva Especial in 1984 I assume it was for the same reasons that it existed in ’94 - becuase the bodega wanted to release it between the reserva and gran reserva timeframes. Curious how a broad web search reveals numerous references to the 1994 Reserva Especial but none to a 1984.

You have me doubting myself now !! it was hot in Spain last weekend but I don’t think the heat affected me so badly ! :-)

I remember the explanation as to the 1994 because a friend did just as you suggested previously - he emailed the winery. My recollection is that they said that it was a one-time event only in 1994. But anything is possible.
The 1994 is a oddity because it is the exact same wine as the Gran Reserva. The only difference is whether, after bottling, the wine spent its first few months in the marketplace or sitting at the bodega.

obviously they didn’t feel the Reserva Especial (es?) were up to much !!
