Let’s go with that Top 20 lists...

Of course ";Quality"; is relative and a completely subjective category.

We can make a ";Top 20"; list of good quality wines under $30 or 30 euros (for the sake of this list we can assume a parity exchange to avoid short-term fluctuations of currencies) in Spain, France and Italy. Of course, it will not demostrate my assertion but at least we will find an interesting number of wines to look for... :-)

Variations in price among countries are a big problem to start with. For instance, that Sociando-Mallet that you say costs $30 is more expensive in Spain (in Lavinia, for instance, you can found the poor ’97 vintage for 36,75 euros).

But let’s start with the list and see if we can agree 20 good wines under that 30 (euros or dollars) price tag.

Just looking at my TNs in English (https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wines.asp?taster=158) I see a lot of candidates. For instance in reds:

    - Maduresa 2001, DO Valencia (https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=4838)

    - Bembibre 2001, DO Bierzo (https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=4285)

    - Enrique Mendoza Shiraz 2001, DO Alicante (https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=4196)

    - Viña Bosconia Reserva 1996, DO Rioja (https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=3960)

    - Secastilla 2001, DO Somontano https://www.verema.com/en/tastingnotes/wine.asp?wine=3573

    - And we can continue and continue: Pago de Carraovejas Cr. 1999, Emilio Moro 1999, Las Reñas Seleccion 2000, Borsao Tres Picos 2001, Divus 2000 (a wonderful QPR trio), Mauro, San Román, Les Sorts Vinyes Velles 2001, Abel Mendoza Selección especial 2001, Casa Castillo Pie Franco, Alión, Remelluri, Finca Villacreces Cr. 1999, Enate Merlot-Merlot 2000, Costers del Gravet 2000, AN/2 2001, ... well this could be long.

    Thirty? Nah, man...

A great value for everyday drinking is not a $30 wine in my book, Juan. Sorry, I’m talking $15 or less. That’s a list worth drawing up. In fact, were the wine world a little less ridiculous today, I’d say let’s try for a ";Top 50 under $12,"; but given the ambition of some, it’s a very tall order.

    $15 or less...

You talk about wines that cost under $30, not me!

Anyway, you can get most of the wines I have mentioned in Spain at retail prices of 15 euros or less: Maduresa 2001, Enrique Mendoza Shiraz 2001, Viña Bosconia Reserva 1996, Pago de Carraovejas Cr. 1999, Emilio Moro 1999, Las Reñas Seleccion 2000, Borsao Tres Picos 2001, Divus 2000, Les Sorts Vinyes Velles 2001, Remelluri, Costers del Gravet 2000, AN/2 2001.

Can you make a similar list of Frech wines under 15 euros?

    Muscadets from Guy Bossard

Thanks, Rogelio (and welcome to the English side of the force :-). We now have 10 French wines. We need at least another ten... ;-)

I am interested in the two Muscadets from biodynamic Guy Bossard (Domaine de L’Ecu). Have you tried them?

There is a TN of one of them in the Spanish version: https://www.verema.com/comunidad/vinoscatados/vino.asp?vino=5035

Price of Spanish wines in the USA

    Ver mensaje de MCamblor

I agree with Manuel. If usually I already find the prices of Spanish wines quite expensive in Spain, here they are simply outrageous. Often, prices are multiplied almost by 2 in the stores (well, a bit less with the weak dollar). If to this you add the enormous selection and fantastic prices that you find for wines from other countries (specially France, Australia, New Zeland, South Africa, Chile), then I am still marvelled that anyone should buy Spanish wines here (but sometimes they also are incredible deals). LdH wines seem not too expensive (Bosconia 96 is $19, the Rosado 93 is $18, the Reserva blanco 87 is $30 ... still expensive compared to the other several jewels you can find at these prices), but Guelbenzo Azul is $15, Dehesa La Granja is $23, Mauro and Alion are awfully expensive, An was $36 ... I’ll make a list sometime :-)

Yes, I have tried both. They are fine and interesting like all this biodinamics, but not impressive.
I rather have the Orthogneiss, it’s got more mineral character. Good staff at very reasonable prices.
