Manuel has been instrumental in introducing me to the delights of aged Rioja, and it was Jay’s turn this evening. Deep strawberry red, the rim is turning terracotta. When I sniffed the nose for the first time, I simply said ‘Wow!’ A complex scene of forest floor, cooked aubergine (eggplant) and red plums, red liquorice and dry tea leaves. Every sip I took showed a silky palate and totally resolved tannin, with a spicy richness that lingered on the palate for ages. Stunning stuff and my WOTN.
