    Recommendations for Valencia (1)

... I am NOT asking for those, I am giving them! ... a Portuguese friend asked for those, and I think it could came handy for someone sometime. Here are some of my personal recommendations for wine bars and restaurants (only ";different"; things and very few, since they are visiting for a very short period)

    Wine bars and bars

    - The very best is ";La Santa Compaña";, sort of close to the Cathedral, very good wines and good prices and simple food, but of superb quality . The place is SUPER small (nothing fancy nor romantic), so I’d advise to either make a reservation or arrive very early (like at 8:30pm or 9:00pm for dinner, or 1:00pm for lunch). The atmosphere is very nice and ";different";. Here is some info (do not pay attention to closing periods, as they had extended it; you’d better phone). I love this place.

    - In the beach/harbour area, Bodega Montaña is a traditional one, with traditional ";tapas"; and a nice selection of wines by the glass. I think that it is more expensive than it deserves, but it is ";different";, and the tapas and wines are certainly good, so you might enjoy it if you are in the area (hopefully the America’s Cup frantic should be over by now).

    - In Burjassot area (if you go working to the Department), the ";Aperitivo Bar"; seems like a very low quality bar; ignore the impression and go: they have superb tapas, and extremely fresh shelfish. Again, all simple, but really good. Alas, the wine is not treated so nicely, but they do have decent cavas and white wines at the right temperature, so this will go beautifully with their tapas.

-Downtown Valencia there is another ";classic"; tapas bar, Ca’n Bermell .... it’s o.k., the tapas are very good, and again it is different, but it is usually very crowded, and they seem not to pay any attention to the wine (they have wine, of course, but it is not treated with care). It is also a restaurant, but in that aspect is not so enjoyable. I find it expensive too.

    Restaurants:
    ------------------------------------------
    -In the ";modern sophisticated"; style:
** La Sucursal, I really love this place, it’s extremely comfortable, with large and separated tables, I like the service, and the wine service, care, and selection is just bordering absolute perfection. It is inside the museum of modern art. It is very good. I think that if you go at lunch time they have a very reasonably priced menu (at nights is quite expensive) You should try to go. They got a Michelin star recently (unfortunately for those of us who knew about it without the star business). The sumilleuse is exceptional.

** Envero is lovely; smaller than the previous one, very comfortable decoration, superb treatment of wine. Food is imaginative without exaggerations. I like it very much. Cheaper than La Sucursal https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=1115

** Seu Xerea is a restaurant that never lets you down. Good food, sensibly imaginative, good service but in the casual style, a place where ones feel very comfortable while having great food and good wine. It is not cheap, but everything is worth it. The lunch menu seems an attractive option (at a very good price). I keep going now and then and it always makes me happy. In the heart of downtown Valencia, close to the Cathedral.
    https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=110

** Sangonereta. I have been in this one, and I did not enjoy the experience at all, but everyone seem to (including a lot of people who I very much trust) so I think I’ll have to give it a second try sometime

-Norte is for superb meats and service and attention in downtown Valencia. The wine care is again exceptional. A real nice restaurant for meat lovers.

    -For nicer prices:
** Il Ritrovo, is a great Italian restaurant, very small again, with superb pastas, and just a perfect treatment of wine. The prices are very very good. They were about to move to a different place, so you should check it. https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=660

** Sargantana, it used to be a superb restaurant, but they were forced to change directions; now it is still above average, with imaginative food and a lot of enthusiasm. The prices are nice, and the cellar is superb. The location is bad; they have a nice terrace which should be very pleasant in summer nights. They have a nice web page also (google it) https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=2286

** Zen, it is a good ’oriental’ restaurant with great wines (alas, not service, but the temperature and glasses are good).
    https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=918

** Los Madriles, wonderful traditional food from Castilla, really good. Nothing imaginative, the service is purely correct, and yes, they have wine (that’s all), but it s very authentic. The lunch specials (cocido on Wednesdays, and other things other days) are things which are getting harder and harder to find. Centrally located (but not in the heart of downtown)
    https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=1778

*** In the middle of the farms of Alboraya, ";Casa Pepico"; is exceptional (in a very very rustic style), with great great tapas, great rice, and a superb treatment of wine (nice prices too). I only went there once, that someone took me (otherwise, I get lost!). It is outside Valencia, but very close by. They are very popular and do not take reservations at night, so again I recommend to go very early (9:00pm is very early ;)

    - Convenient to the Burjassot area, three proposals:
***Araguaney, for wonderful meat, nice wines, prosciuto, salad ... and little else, but everything really good. This is the closest place to the University (you can walk) https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=528

*** Tariq, authentic Pakistani food in a very fun, nice and friendly decorated restaurant. The food is really good, the service is nice, and they have some cavas and white wine which is the only thing you can have with this food. Very close to school, but need a car
    https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=963

*** Levante, for traditional paellas is the very best (they grow their own ";garrofo"; because they claim that they can not get the local one anymore, only the big, tasteless, chinesse or chilean ones), they also have nice tapas for starters, and if you like super classic wine (really old traditional Riojas), this place is paradise, with a collection started by the owner’s father, well kept and with prices often way lower than you can find anwywhere, including the cellars themselves ... they really have jewels there! ... go and have some of those wines if you like them (one has to be in the right mood) and make someone else drive back ;) ... Not so close to school, but still worth the trip.
    https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=943

-In these ones I have not been but I’m dying to go. People who I very much trust recommends them, so I pass the recommendation (do tell me about them if you go!)

** El alto de Colon, in a remodeled modernist market, really beautiful, and the food seems terrific. Go if you have the occasion. I think that it is a must. https://www.verema.com/comunidad/mesasyvino/restaurante.asp?restaurante=1518

** Samsha, another one I just have to go. The comments by good people are very good. The lunch menu seems like a wonderful (and cheap) option

** Vertical, in the top of a hight building overlooking the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. They do not seem to have very positive comments, but I am still very curious about it, since it seems to me impossible that the team of ";La Sucursal"; can do something really wrong. The views seem exceptional.

-I do not recommend going to any of the beach restaurants in the summer, as they are so very crowded that the service tends to be horrid, and the experience is not nice (plus forget about any notion of taking care of wine; the wine treatment is awful and the wine prices abusive). If you go just because it is so pleasant to be lunching in a terrace in front of the beach, then any one would do just as good or as bad (the famous ones are not any better any more).

There is a relatively new one that is in the ’fancy style’ with real good food and a wonderful wine attention (and superb service): Tridente, in the ";hotel Neptuno";, very close to the new America’s Cup mall-harbor. More expensive than the other ones.

There are also a bunch inside the new AC harbor, with just o.k. food (and just o.k. wine service)

    Re: Wine stores

    Wine stores:

Beals (or its sister Bodegas Santander) in Calle Alcira
This is my favorite. The store is not pretty as the next two, but the selection is great and the prices are the best of Valencia.(***)

    Mantequerias Castillo
Good selection, good prices, nice store, wonderful gourmet products (specially the Jamon Iberico cut by hand ... hmmmmmm!!!!!)
    http://www.mantequeriascastillo.com/

    Las Añadas de España
Is a very very pretty shop, it’s a pleasure to visit. Centrally located in downtown (almost across the FNAC) The prices are high though (and I think that the gourmet products are much better in Mantequerias Castillo)
    c/ Xátiva, 1. Tfno. 963 533845.
    http://www.lasanadas.es/ doesn’t seem to work; http://www.concierge.com/destination/valencia/shopping/detail?id=1703

There are more, but you have enough with those (of course, the usual El Corte Ingles, and the Gourmet section have a lot of good wines, but they are usually very expensive)

(***) I seem uncapable to find the exact address, but Beals is of the same owner as

    Bodegas Santander
    c? Santander, 4.
    Tlfn. 963 773 947

if you phone them, they should be able to give you the exact address of beals (a nicer location than Bodegas Santander)
