"Organic " Wine
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiI recently posted a tasting note on Genium Celler ";Ecològic"; 2003 (D.O. Priorat). I understand that he name ";Ecològic"; derives from some sort of certification from a Catalan government board of agriculture (Consell Català de la Producció Agrària Ecològica) that the wine’s production is completely organic. Do many other wines from Spain have this or some other similar certification? Would many wines qualify?

Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiI think there are quite a few more. I know Albet i Noia in Penedes are organic, and Viña Ijalba in Rioja. There is some confusion about the use of ";ecológico"; and ";biológico"; (and even ";orgánico"; as an anglicism) in Castilian, and I imagine in Catalan too.

Ver mensaje de WaltZalenski“Vinos ecológicos” is the Spanish label for Organic Wines. Each Autonomous Government has its own regulation, however the main responsible is the so called “Comisión Reguladora de la Agricultura Ecológica” dependent of the Spanish central government. There’s also a European Directive CEE 2092/91 covering the different aspects of ecological agriculture.

I don’t recall ever seeing it other than on Genium Celler ’Ecològic.’ Is it your impression that many wines qualify for a certification but just do not bother to obtain one, or do most wines not qualify?

Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiWell, is more frequent than expected. In the web of the Consell Català de la Producció Agrària Ecológica (http://www.ccpae.org/) you can find 80 producers with the ecological certification.... only in Catalunya!
However the number of producer under this qualification is –probably- less impressing in other regions of Spain.
