Gotim bru...
Gotim bru...
Canarias is ... worse! (not just different)
Sabía prematuro y no importaba...
Re: Canarias is ... worse! (not just different)

http://forums.winespectator.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=9306023451&f=3146091161&m=9866002
Castell del Remei “;1780”; 1998 (14%). C-S, Tempranillo and Grenache. 29€;
Almost opaque cherry, one inch away from black. Cabernet-Superstructured, but the Grenache is perceptible. VERY closed in the nose, begging for air and some aggressive aeration strategy: double-decanted the first half of the bottle, which gave no hint of being made of wine until well after 45’;. Serious core of jammy black fruit “;implicit”; but far from evident. Eventually opens, but glad I didn’;t mean this to go with a meal. I’;d have wrecked the microwave … Third sip (“;Handle with care”;) and purple tongue already.
After 2+ hours the wine is a beauty: warm and only moderately sweet nose of almost overripe black fruit (it always lacked a little focus throughout), mocha, ink, tar, and chocolate. Gloriously perfumed with (I could swear, in spite of reports otherwise) French oak (absorbed by the fruit) and a little spirity at times. Intensely fruity in a chocolate-spicy context, this reminds me very vividly of Rosemount Traditional’;97, though slightly less generous in the nose.
If bottle age is what it needs, then I’;m in trouble, because I snatched the last bottle of the 98 from the shelf, already occupied by a case of the 99s.
The following day it was better still (amazing how the last drop always knows it’;s the last and outperforms the rest …). Fairly dry in the mouth, Prioratish in size but not in the nose, which is more McLaren.
On the whole, if I have to compare this with the CÉRVOLES 1999 (and that’;s the only reason why I opened this while I remember the Cérvoles), I could easily say that the same winemaker in the same region, with the same varietals, has produced a bottle of Priorat with the Cérvoles and a bottle of McLaren Vale with this 1780. Whether that’;s versatility or lack of regional character I ignore …Rating 90.
