I like the wines of Noel Verset. He retired a few years ago in his 80’s and I believe his last vintage was 2001. He has made his own style of traditional Cornas for many decades. No new oak and old vine Syrah, M.Verset owned some of the oldest vines and best plots in the village. The total production was never more than about 300 cases in any one year and pricing was very fair. Dark red and with a surprisingly low alcohol level of 12.5% from this successful vintage in the N.Rhone. A wild nose of garrigue, red cherries, mint and wet granite. Black fruits like wild blackberries, ripe but certainly noticeable tannins and some black pepper as well. Still a baby. 92+/100. I look forward to drinking other bottles in the future. A bottle of the 1995 that I tried six months ago was still ever so youthful but showed its wild and unique personality.
