WINERY

The location of Frederiksdal on Lolland’s westernmost tip, right next to the Langeland Strait, is ideal for cherry production.

The climate is perfect. The sun is reflected in the sea. Winter is mild and spring comes early. This all contributes to a long growing season, resulting in great the taste and complexity of the cherries.

Only the small, black Danish Stevnsbær cherry, referred to by fruit experts as the Nordic grape, is used in the wine production. The berries themselves are not suitable for eating, but they are, in turn, excellent for wine production.

Stevnsbær cherries are found in several parts of Northern Europe, but the Danish berries are the very best.

Frederiksdal Estate dates back to 1305, the present white main building being built in 1756.

 

PRODUCTION

44 ha.

After fermentation the wine is decanted into small, 25-litre carboys, and left outside in the sun for a year.

The wine is then stored for another year in used, 450-litre, Cognac barrels.

Nielstrupmark: 13.4 ha
. Planted in 1993. Wine produced here since 2006.
 100% Birgitte (a Stevnsbær sour cherry)

Skelstrupmark: 17.3 ha. Planted in 2009. Wine produced here since 2013. 63% Vicky, 37% Birgitte (both Stevnsbær varieties) and 1% Ungarische Traubige.

Jørgensmark: 4.9 ha. Planted in 2010. Wine produced here since 2014. 53% Birgitte (a Stevnsbær sour cherry), 16% Kelleris, 16% Ungarische Traubige, 12% Favorit and 3% Løvskal.

Johannesmark
: 2.7 ha. Planted in 2005. Wine produced here since 2013. 100% Birgitte (a Stevnsbær sour cherry)

Skrædderbanken: 2 ha. Planted since 2009 (Tailor´s Hill)

 

TASTING

The wine is tawny colour, deep intensity, hazy (not taint), dense in the glass, coloured gliceric tears.

The nose is clean, pronounced in intensity, aromas of fig, mermelade, licor, black plum, caramel of strawberry and cherry.

The wine is medium dry with high acidity, medium tannins, and high alcohol, medium+ intensity with flavours: Red Cherry, green berries, nuts and a bit salty (salted fish).

Medium finish (dry wood, caramel, stones).

The wine is complex, extremely pleasant, the acidity and the production method do a very good development in a few years. 

High top quality wine made from cherries.

Pariring with chocolate cake (Sacher torte).
