The Can Ràfols Dels Caus "Caus Lubis" not infrequently is referred to as Spain’s best merlot. At least in recent years, I don’t think the wine has been imported to the US. The 1995 is almost glossy black in color. The nose, although complex, struck me as a bit too reticent, with aromas of mature fruit, leather, and herbs, ash, and mint. The palate is elegant and balanced, with good fruit, balsamic, tobacco, and underbrush. Well but not overly endowed, something about this wine does seem to suggest a fine pedigree. I suspect this bottle has not yet reached its peak. I’ll pull another one out in two years.
