Presented to me blind. Definitely different. I thought it was an extraordinarily opulent and well-made Monastrell. Nose of very sweet berry fruit, white flowers, and a slight touch of pepper hovering over a mass of earth, coal, and dark chocolate. A muscular, mouthfilling wine with huge but polished ripe tannins. An impressive wine, but I’m not yet convinced it is one that I’ll return to often. The fruit has an oddly distinct taste and borders on being a bit cloying or overripe. I do admire the way this wine is put together, but it seems perverse to like a wine’s structure better than the taste of its fruit. I have some of this wine in my cellar and will revisit it. I can see how it got the reputation as somewhat of a "show" wine in Spain.
