Wow! What happened to Beryna in 2003?
Wow! What happened to Beryna in 2003?
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiIt is an amazing wine for the price! MUCH better than the more than satisfactory 2002. This improvement seems to reflect more than mere vintage variation. What is going on at Bodegas Bernabé Navarro to make such a dramatic change?
Re: Wow! What happened to Beryna in 2003?
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiYep, I must admit I was even prejudiced agains this wine after so many (and so emphatic) positive TNs, but actually it’s that good, or almost. Always a reason to celebrate :^)
Re: What happened to Beryna in 2003?
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiIn the Spanish side some people have been very impressed for this wine already (it was bottled on January 2005): https://www.verema.com/comunidad/vinoscatados/vino.asp?vino=10220
I liked the wonderful QPR of Beryna 2002. After all these comments I’m avid of trying that 2003. Walt, it’s funny that you have tried this wine earlier than me, being some thousand miles away...
What is the potential for ageing that you appreciate on this wine?
Re: What happened to Beryna in 2003?
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchAging? This is not one for your grandchildren. My guess is that the wine will do well for 4 - 6 years -- possibly more, but I tend to be conservative about such estimates.
Aging of Mediterranean wines
Ver mensaje de WaltZalenskiThis is the great conundrum (to use Greenspan’s words ;-) of our time. These kind of wines can be very opulent when released but if you buy too much bottles to be drunk after 4-5 years there can be unpleasant surprises. We need much more evidence on this subject.
Re: Aging of Mediterranean wines
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchBeryna is 60% Monastrell. Obviously the warm weather in the Levant is a distinguishing factor between most Spanish Monastrell and certain examples of French Mourvedre, which has a well-established aging potential. On the other hand, serious attempts to make ageworthy wines where Monastrell is prominent is just barely beginning. In any event, this wine would be a great buy even if it lasted only 2 - 3 years.
Joaquín Gálvez at Bodegas Bernabé Navarro
Ver mensaje de Juan SuchI see that Joaquín Gálvez now is working with Bodegas Bernabé Navarro, as is mentioned in the last paragraph of the article linked below. I would not be surprised to learn that Joaquín’s involvement has helped boost quality.
