El Puntido 2001 is the product of a new project by the Eguren family in Rioja Alavesa. This modern Rioja wine is 100% tempranillo and sees 18 months in oak. It is highly extracted and, like its label, blackish in color. Aromatics consist of black fruit, forest notes, dark chocolate, smoke, and sweet caramel/toffee. It is a very weighty and chewy in the mouth, showing plenty of black fruit, some espresso notes, and somewhat astringent tannins. The wine needs a few years for the wood and tannins to integrate, but there is sufficient balance to suggest that will occur.
