I try this out alongside homemade roasted chestnut ravioli with a fennel-and-chorizo-infused cream sauce. I wouldn’t call it a good match, since each element was fine on its own but did nothing to complement the other when I tasted both together. A dish and a wine that kept the peace with each other. And that’s that. My second bottle of ’98 Roda I. Aired out for more than an hourm but showing little change since I opened it, Cedar, China ink, dried rosemary, licorice, blackcurrant, plum and black cherry on the nose. Perhaps there is less wood than in previous vintages, but it’s still remarkably oaky. In the mouth it’s a clunky, very concentrated wine. In the mouth, it reveals blackcurrant, cocoa, anise and a hint of herbs. Moderate length, with ripe, mildly drying tannins on the aftertaste. Acidity is lowish. This needs a few years in the bottle to show its best, but given the structure, I wouldn’t leave it for too long. Very, very marginal value at $50.
