Helio San Miguel, the New York correspondent of Club de Gourmets, has brought to my attention something that I should have realized but never noticed: A trend has developed in naming expensive special cuvees with often fake Latinate words ending with the letters ’us.’ He cited Pingus, Terreus, Janus, Aurus, Emeritus, and Erasmus. I can also think of Ferratus and Malleolus. Can you think of any others?
Yes, Gaudium and there are some others that I´m not sure if it´s really latin or just sounds like it (malleolus, pittacum, tilenus..)
and with the prices some of these fetch one could add Godhelpus !
Good additions! But I still suspect we are missing a few more.
Beleive it or not, I will be participating in a blind tasting of 12 ";us"; wines - a rather strange theme but a good excuse to drink some of these better wines.
Let me add ";laudus"; from Alicante.
