    Wines From Spain Awards 2014

The annual Wines of Spain tasting is one of the biggest wine events in London.
I have been attending for many years and while the 'crisis' has seen a reduction in the number of wineries attending it is still an important trade show.
Recently I attended a tasting to reveal the award winners.
Like all awards care needs to be taken about how representative they are.
The tasters in this case are highly regarded and they selected 102 wines for special mention out of 700 tasted.
In each class there was an award winner.
    Here are those winners.

    BEST CAVA
    Franck Massard Mas Sardana NV

    BEST VALUE CAVA
    Sumarocca
    The Wine Society's Reserva

    On to the whites's...

    BEST NEW DISCOVERY
    Suertes del Marqués
    Trenzado 2012

    BEST WHITE OVER £10
    Bodegas Pablo Padin
    Segrel Ambar Albariño 2012

    BEST PREMIUM WHITE
    Naia
    Naiades 2011

    BEST RIOJA
    Marqués de Murrieta
    Capellanía 2009

    BEST VALUE ROSADO
    Anecoop
    Hacienda Uvains Garnacha 2013

    And the red's....

    BEST VALUE RED
    Bodegas Bohórquez
    Momo Vendimia Seleccionada 2010

    BEST RED OVER £10
    Bodegas Ismael Arroyo
    Valsotillo Crianza 2011

    BEST PREMIUM RED £20+
    Pago de Carraovejas Crianza 2011

    ...and finally, Sweet and Fortified

    BEST DRY FORTIFIED

    Sanchez Romate
    Cayetano del Pino Palo Cortado

    and

    Fernando de Castilla
    Classic Manzanilla

    BEST OWN LABEL FORTIFIED
    Waitrose/ Emilio Lustau
    Jerezana Dry Olorosso

    BEST SWEET WINE
    Gorka Izagirre
    Late harvest Arima 2010

I wasn't convinced by all these winners, but that's inevitable, how boring if we all felt the same.
I thought in the white category that the Pazo de Señorans Selección de Añada 2007 deserved more recognition.
And in the Reds LRA's Torre de Oña Reserva 2009 and Guelbenzu Lombana 2005 were very impressive.

There's a full list of all 102 winners here

    Sorry for the double post.

Do you think that the wines given awards represent the Spanish wine scene?
I'm sure we all woulf pick slightly different wines perhaps but are they at the same level as your favourites?

    Hi Ray,
    sorry for the delay.

Well, you know, I really dislike wine contests. I find no sense (neither in scores ;-) ).

Anyway, I tried Trenzado a couple of weeks ago. It was one of those wines in my to-do list and really enjoyed it. Have you tasted?

    Regards,

    Jose
