Feria del jamon y embutidos de segorbe, 2011.

[caption id="attachment_1164" align="alignleft" width="87" caption="Poster for the Fair."][/caption] For the seven years I have lived here I have looked at the Serranos, a range of mountains that run inland from Sagunto and form one side of  the Turia valley. I can see these mountains clearly from my terrace and have often thought about crossing them to see what was on the other side. Actually I knew about Segorbe( one of the towns on the other side) because it is not just home to the Alt Palancia jamon and embutidos fair each year, there are also a number of bodegas in the immediate surroundings and the olive oil press at Altura is the only one which has two lines, one dedicated to ecologically produced olive oil. I also knew that not far away was the Sierra Espedan with its natural cork oak forest and that very good olive oils come from here. The fair coincides with the towns fiesta and at 2pm each day there is a bull running through the streets of the town. However this is not the traditional Spanish bull run but shares its style with the French Provençal town of Arles where horseriders form an arrow-head and drive the bulls through the streets between the horses. Here, local butchers show their Jamons, chorizos, salcichons, longanizas de pascua, and morcillas whist the temporary bar plies a good trade in San Miguel and wines from the local co-operative to wash them down. Entry is by tickets, in the plural. Depending on your choice you can buy tickets for bread with tomato and/or olive oil, sausages, either cooked or cured, jamon and a plate of cheese. Spending 10€ buys all four tickets and an awful lot of food! Beer or wine is extra. [caption id="attachment_1170" align="alignleft" width="105" caption="Plate of Reserve Jamon."][/caption] In the fair itself the crowd begins to gather by about half-past ten in the morning and plates of pan con tomate started to appear on the tables amongst animated groups together with the sausages, jamon and cheeses and beers and bottles of wine. The local butchers all have their logos prominently displayed but the cheese-maker was a bit harder to identify.....until the van arrived with deliveries! Quesos del Niño are a firm with an international reputation from the nearby town of Vall d´Uixo who produce a range of cheeses from cattle, sheep and goats milk , some of them ecological. Generous slices of tronchon, servilleta, cincho and others slipped down nicely! The firm is part of the Valencian cheese producers association. www.quesosdelnino.com They also produce a range of soft cheeses which were not on show. [caption id="attachment_1168" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Plate of Artesan Cheese."][/caption] The fair was a friendly affair with producers happy to talk about their products and jamons on sale from 40-60€ apiece depending on style, age and size! And now I know what is on the other side of the mountain! Next visit up here to some of the local bodegas!
